A Shelton man was arrested on Tuesday for driving under the influence, police said.
They say the vehicle driven by 64-year-old Walter Ciepiela was spotted traveling south in the northbound lanes near exit 11 a little before 1 a.m. Ciepiela avoided the stop sticks and nearly struck a police cruiser before increasing his speed to more than 60 miles per hour, according the police report.
Trooper Gregory Sawicki first encountered Ciepiela’s vehicle near Exit 9 in Trumbull.
A trooper stopped Ciepiela on Interstate 95 as he allegedly approached the trooper head-on.
He was held on a $50,000 and was expected to be arraigned later today in Bridgeport Superior Court. Stop sticks have sharp protrusions that puncture tires.
Trooper Kauffman was posted on Route 8 near exit 1 and successfully deployed the stop sticks which struck the two driver’s side tires. Ciepiela then sped from the scene reaching a speed of more than 60 miles per hour, almost hitting a trooper’s cruisers.
When police talked to Ciepiela, he slurred his words, they said.

Using different entrance ramps, two troopers got onto the highway and slowly headed north. Ciepiela’s Honda CR-V drove by each patrol auto, narrowing missing each one, police said.
