Delta Scrambles to Restore Servers After Power Cut

In a statement, Delta said the additional cancellations were to allow the carrier “to reset the operation and get crews, aircraft and other operational elements in place to take care of customers”.

The airline, which owns about a 45% share of the Columbia passenger market, said it canceled 1,000 flights Monday.

Although the systems came back up after a few hours’ delay, Delta has struggled to resume normal operations as it worked to clear stranded passengers. The airline is also offering compensation to customers who have been significantly affected by delays and cancellations.

It’s still unclear what caused the malfunction. Delta says it’s still operating in recovery mode after Monday’s major computer outage.

Delta also extended a travel waiver to customers traveling today. The investigation of the outage is ongoing, but he said there is no indication that the problems were caused by a hack or intentional breach of the system. No other customers lost power, a spokesman said.

The airline released a statement before 6 a.m. on its website issuing travel waivers to customers travelling on August 9 as well as accommodation and compensation to customers seriously affected by the delays and cancellations.

For passengers, hardship from the early Monday morning meltdown was compounded by the fact that Delta’s flight-status updates weren’t working either.

Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter said that after the power outage, key systems and network equipment did not switch over to backups.

“Just a couple of weeks ago, Southwest Airlines canceled more than 2,000 flights after a faulty router knocked out part of its systems”.

Delta sent reservations personnel from the corporate headquarters in Atlanta to help customer service agents process passengers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport., the airline’s main hub. The vouchers are available for travel on all Delta and Delta Connection-operated flights.

The utility company that delivers electricity to Delta disputed the airline’s explanation. The carrier didn’t estimate how long repairs would take.

The company, which has not yet detailed the financial impact of the outage, said on its website that as of 12:30 p.m. EDT, it had canceled about 530 flights, while about 1,600 had departed.
