According to a report by Mike Reiss of ESPN, defensive end Rob Ninkovich suffered a torn triceps in practice on Tuesday. He will undergo a MRI later this week to determine the severity of the injury.

Ninkovich, the projected starter at left defensive end, an underrated defensive leader for the Patriots and, if he’s out for the year, it will be a pretty big blow to the Pats defense.

While Ninkovich – based on the timetable provided – could be back for the start of the season, the pressing and pulling a defensive end has to do puts unique stress on the triceps.

The Chris Long signing looks even more shrewd now with Ninkovich likely out for the start of the season. Beyond them reside 2015 third- and fourth-round picks Geneo Grissom and Trey Flowers, respectively, and a cast of undrafted free agents. He became a starter in 2010 and has 42 career sacks, including 6 1/2 last season.

Bill Belichick had praised Ninkovich for his consistency, versatility, football intelligence and team-first approach, Ninkovich is also valued for his work setting the edge as a run defender. Ninkovich is entering the final season of a two-year, $7 million deal.
