Here are just some of 74-year-old Mavis’ highlights…

The grandmother of the Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty said she went “ballistic” after his gold medal win, and revealed that he used to scream in the bath from a fear of water.

Footage of the moment showed Ms Williams shouting: “Yes!”

The Welsh swimmer finished second behind world record holder Team USA’s Katie Ledecky, who also won gold in the 2012 London Olympics.

The proud nan even covered her house in bunting.

“My Grandson has done it”, the proud gran tweeted.

“I did it for my country and that means so much for me”, Adam told BBC Sport. “I knew from the warm-up I could not go 57 (seconds)”.

Great Britain’s Adam Peaty won the 100m breaststroke gold medal competing in his first Olympic Games.

Ms Williams, dubbed “classic” by her Olympic champion grandson, said she was looking forward to giving him a hug when he returns home.

“I can’t believe it”.

Rio 2016 is Peaty’s first Olympic Games, and he’s been a victor at every single stage.

“I kept a cool head through the semis and then pushed on again”.

He returned to social media a few hours later, posting a picture of himself in the pool with eyes shut and arms outstretched seconds after taking gold.

“She’s a great nan and she’s always loved swimming”, he said after his victory.

“I wanted to come here and give it absolutely everything and have no regrets”.

Peaty has been working hard on improving his dive to match the explosive finish which had already earned him European, World and Commonwealth gold medals.

“The feeling is totally insane”, Sjostrom said. “It’s not like someone is holding a gun at the end of the lane, so I’ve got nothing to lose”. “I think you can say I’ve overcome that fear”.

Peaty’s daily diet sees him consume 8000 calories – more than three times the amount an average man eats – across seven meals. It’s steadily sinking in, and I’m starting to get used to him being on telly all the time.

“He’s been swimming ever since”, she added.
