“It’s an incredible feeling and it’s definitely not sunk in yet”, said Carlin.

The Welsh swimmer was always going to be aiming for second at best as peerless American Katie Ledecky won gold in a world record of three minutes 56.46 seconds. She’s been there and done it all. My stroke felt absolutely wonderful tonight and I just kept pumping it through.

“We’re obsessed with self-improvement, pushing Team GB forward”. I came out tonight, [the plan was to] take that first 50 easy then come back with everything I’ve got.

“It’s so surreal to get Team GB’s first gold”, said Adam.

His march to glory was never in doubt from the moment he entered the water at just before 3am United Kingdom time (11pm local time).

Although Williams’ tweets have only gone viral during the Olympics, she’s actually been using the micro-blogging service to support her grandson for quite some time. She has already amassed almost 5,000 followers. “I didn’t realize it was a world record”.

“She’s a great nan”.

“I can’t believe it”.

“To see him flourish on the world stage is such a fantastic boost for the whole region, as well as Uttoxeter in particular, so we are very excited to be able to help celebrate”.

“Most importantly she understands everyone is different”.

“When his mum (Caroline) used to take him to the pool he used to scream there”.

Congratulations also go to Jazz Carlin, who won silver in the women’s 400m freestyle swim. Mr Peaty added he puts in “200% and more”.

Peaty was clear favourite entering the Games as the world champion and only man in history to swim beneath 58 seconds.

He already lowered the world record, his own, in the preliminary heats on Saturday.

And in Sunday’s final, Peaty went even quicker. She didn’t have to get me pumped up because I knew this arena would be absolutely ideal for me.

He said: “I’m going to keep pushing the boundaries that no one has pushed before”.
