In Texas, health officials are confirming a Zika-related death in a newborn baby girl. As anticipated, she criticized federal lawmakers for failing to agree on a bill to provide resources to respond to the threat of Zika.
Scott released a statement minutes before Clinton made remarks after touring a community health center in Miami near where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a travel advisory regarding the virus. Writing in the Lexington Herald-Leader last week, he said lawmakers would deal with Zika funding after Labor Day when Congress is back in session.
While not incredibly widespread, the Zika virus has taken its toll in places like Florida, where humidity, rain and hot weather all contribute to a growing mosquito population. A bipartisan compromise bill was eventually floated, but failed.

Health officials say transmission of the mosquito-borne virus has been limited to an area less than 1 square mile just north of downtown Miami.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week issued an advisory that pregnant women should avoid going to Wynwood and the surrounding neighborhoods unless absolutely necessary, as the virus can cause severe birth defects.
The advisory came a week after United States health agencies warned against travel to the Florida neighbourhood and months after warning against travel to Brazil.
In a report out this week, ratings agency Moody’s warned that the outbreak and travel warnings could have an impact on travel, which would in turn affect Miami’s tax revenues or credit ratings. “If the guidance expands to include the entire city or remains in effect through the fall and into the high season of December to March, these revenue streams could experience declines”. That is on top of 357 travel-related cases and another 55 cases involving pregnant women, for a total of 429.
Test results linking the death to Zika were confirmed Friday.
He said condoms and other barrier methods can reduce the chance of getting Zika from sex.
“She was in El Salvador, and what my understanding is she’s from El Salvador traveling here to Harris County, but I can’t give you anything more because I don’t have all of those details, but to let you know she came to Harris County in her second trimester”, says Dr. Umair A. She said the money will partly go to fund expanded surveillance and testing of both mosquitoes and people and “to make sure that our systems for surveillance of human cases and mosquitos and lab testing and informational technology are as good as they can possibly be”.
