Roadside Attractions is yet to pin down a USA release date for The Sea of Trees, though we understand the studio plans to roll out Van Sant’s feature film in the United Kingdom come April. Again, it seemed like a safe bet, but they later backtracked after critics bashed the film.
The film which wasn’t well received at Cannes this year, centres on Arthur (McConaguhey) who in the midst of a personal crisis with wife Joan (Watts), leaves his possessions behind after and travels to Japan.
A24’s picks for releases are a library of great works, including Room, Ex Machina, and The Witch.
The reviews left many people asking if the movie would ever make it to the big screens.
The film will have a limited release and will be available to stream from August 26.

The upcoming film stars Matthew McConaughey as a professor who travels to Japan’s famed “Suicide Forest” to take his own life, only to decide to aid a lost Japanese man in the process. Arthur devotes himself to saving Takumi and returning him home to safety, and the two embark on a spiritual, life-changing journey of friendship, discovery, and healing-one which may ultimately re-connect Arthur with his love for his wife.
