Labour leadership race: Owen Smith wins backing of steelworkers’ union Community

He also argued that when the members joined, the Labour website and other communications said they would be “a key part of the team”, and thus eligible to vote in any leadership election. Community’s members desperately need a Labour Party that not only speaks for them, but speaks to the country at large.

Corbyn is favorite to hold onto his job after the contest was forced by lawmakers unhappy with his leadership and in particular his performance in the European Union referendum and its aftermath, when he called for the immediate start of the formal process for leaving the bloc. She did not attend this week’s meeting. It just shows how desperate his campaign has become and the lengths to which he’s prepared to descend to that he’s now trying scare Labour members into voting for him.

Cllr Chris Loftus said Mr Corbyn received 63 votes followed by challenger Owen Smith on 55.

The court action affects nearly 130,000 disenfranchised Labour supporters who could play an important role in the contest if they win the right to vote.

He accused Mr Corbyn of presiding over an increasingly fractious Labour Party and “sloganising” rather than developing effective policies that would lead them back to power.

More than 1,000 people took part in a pro-Corbyn rally in Newcastle last week, and backed him to continue as party leader.

The Labour Party and its general secretary, Iain McNicol, say the rules permit the July 12 freeze date and there has been no contractual breach or misrepresentation.

But he added: “I believe the world has become a more unsafe, volatile place, I believe Russian Federation is a more risky power than it used to be”.
