In a major swoop, Mumbai police late on Tuesday arrested five top medicos of the reputed Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, in Mumbai, in connection with a kidney sale racket. This is the 12th arrest in the case so far.

The arrests by the Mumbai police have shocked the medical fraternity. Thakur was arrested on Monday and was produced before the court on Tuesday. Their role was revealed by those who had been arrested earlier, and cops verified all the information with the help of hospital records before taking the five doctors, including CEO, into custody around 8.30 pm.
The Powai police, which is probing 31 transplants that took place in the hospital in the past one year, earlier shared the paperwork related to the transplants with the Directorate of Health Services under the state government to check for discrepancies. The racket was unearthed on July 14.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Deven Bharti confirmed TOI total five doctors. The three-member committee had questioned seven other doctors of the hospital two weeks back and presented a prelimnary report to the state health director (who is also the appropriate authority).
A FIR was registered on July 13 under section 419, 420, 465, 467, 468, 471.120 (b) IPC r/w 19 the plantation of Human Organ Act.
Last month, the police were tipped off that an illegal kidney transplants were being done at Hiranandani Hospital; in many cases donors and recipients were not related and the operations were performed based on fake documentation.

“From the very first day, we knew that the doctors were involved in the case, as we had seen their blank letterheads being used”.
