This isn’t the first time Lyft, which is battling larger rival Uber, has teamed with the Seattle-based coffee giant. Meanwhile, first-time Lyft users who link to their Starbucks accounts will automatically receive 125 stars, which earns them one free food or drink item.
On demand ride provider Lyft is getting physical – creating actual gift cards with $20 in ride credit that people can buy beginning next week at participating Starbucks stores across the U.S. The cards also come with a $5 Starbucks gift card as a free bonus, and Lyft passengers will also start being able to earn Starbucks Reward Stars by riding. Lyft has been on the upswing lately, posting July numbers that topped previous months for the number of new passengers and drivers on board. Moreover, the partnership that commenced a year ago allowed riders to give a particularly phenomenal driver a virtual Starbucks gift card as a tip.
“The gift cards allow us to get in front of a lot of people who may not be familiar with Lyft, or they can get in front of people who want to gift Lyft to other people”, Hsiang said.
This actually isn’t the first time Lyft has worked with Starbucks on a promotional deal benefiting both parties.
As well as making purchasing Lyft credit easy, the promotion will have plenty of perks for Starbucks customers.

Lyft said it was marking the announcement by sharing data on which USA cities have the most frequent number of customers who use the ride-hailing service to visit Starbucks. Card purchasers will receive a Starbucks gift card for $5. For those customers who prefer to remain digital, however, Lyft is offering the option to give referral codes to friends and family, which they can use to join the app and get a free ride.
