Pennsylvania attorney general acted over revenge

In fact, she “never had access to those documents”, Shargel said.

Kane was the first woman elected to the state’s post.

In a transcript from Kane’s grand jury hearing, she denied releasing secret grand jury information.

Prosecutors say Kane leaked secret grand jury information to a reporter in 2014 in an effort to embarrass Fina.

Prosecutors will begin calling witnesses Tuesday.

King is expected to be called as a witness some time this week. It remains unclear whether Kane will testify.

After eight hours of a tedious selection process, six men and six women were selected Monday for the jury panel.

Kane, 50, a first-term Democrat, faces charges of perjury, obstructing administration of law, abuse of office and false swearing in connection with allegations she orchestrated the illegal disclosure of confidential investigative information and secret grand jury information to the media and then engaged in acts created to hide and cover up her alleged conduct.

They then believe she lied under oath to cover it up.

The emails, which were released by Kane after much court wrangling, led Fina to quit his job with the Philadelphia District Attorney, and claimed the jobs of two state Supreme Court justices and several other state officials in what became known as “Porngate”. He died a year ago.

During opening statements, prosecutor Michelle Henry laid out how Kane was incensed by a bit of bad press and wanted to get back the man she blamed for the story by orchestrating a negative article of her own. On Tuesday, Henry described him as a “casualty” of Kane’s blind pursuit of revenge.

Prosecutors say she oversaw the leak of confidential information to a Philadelphia newspaper to embarrass a political rival, and then lied to a grand jury investigating her. It will depend where things stand at trial, she said.

Once a rising star in the state Democratic party, Kane has instead seen her first term marred by scandal and a dizzying rate of turnover among her top aides.

The defense, in opening statements, told jurors that Kane wouldn’t have risked her career over a feud with Fina.

The evidence will show King and Morrow are to blame and are lying to save themselves, he said.

The judge ordered jurors and lawyers to reconvene at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when lawyers will give their opening statements to the jury and witnesses will begin providing testimony.

That’s a double-edged sword for prosecutors. Kane has been prohibited by the judge from bringing up porn as part of her defense. Questioned by Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele, Detective Bradbury spoke about the process authorities used to build the case.

Now the state’s Inspector General, Beemer was special counsel and chief of the AG’s criminal prosecution division when he met with agents Michael Miletto and David Peiffer to discuss the 2009 Mondesire grand jury. Many experts say it’s an “art” to pick just the right jurors, but Parry said attorneys never really know what jurors may be thinking.

However, before Beemer testified further about his communications with Kane on that news article, the trial was recessed until Wednesday.
