Austin Seferian-Jenkins: Getting booted from OTAS was a ‘wake-up call’
Austin Seferian-Jenkins still is battling for a starting job but the oft-injured Bucs tight end has a healthy attitude. “I don’t care what the depth chart is”. There’s certainly some overlap, but Sweezy is going to have to learn new techniques, new calls, and new adjustments – and he’ll have only a few weeks to practice them before the season starts, if that. “Whatever it is, the coaches know it”.

Brate, who stepped in while Seferian-Jenkins was sidelined past year and became the team’s best pass-catching tight end, has not slowed down after his quick start to camp. He won’t even settle for me being great. “If I want to be a great player that I’m capable of being, and I think I can be a really special player, I’ve got to be detail oriented”. I thank God every single day he kicked me out of practice.
The first preseason game of the season isn’t that important, as usually most of the starters either sit or only play a series or two depending on how quick the first series goes. But he also had a drop in the red zone Tuesday that drew the ire of some fans who, like many, had hoped this could be the tight end’s breakout year.
“Every single day since Day 1, to Day 2, to Day 3, to Day 4, to Day 5, to Day 6, to Day 7 to Day 8, whatever day it is now, I’ve gotten better”, he said. The former University of Washington standout has made several acrobatic catches down the middle of the field in the last two camp practices. I love the competition from our D-ends. “I’m peaking. I’m gonna outrun this guy, ‘” he laughed. Finally, the new look defense will be on display and the record-setting offense of 2015 will get the chance to improve on past year.

Seferian-Jenkins said Tuesday that he’s thankful that Koetter took that step because it served to remind him how much work he has to put in on the field. I’m a player, the coaches coach, and those guys know what they’re doing. And coach Koetter is not going to let be below that. It’s just been great all around.
