Phelps, Lochte swim for United States in freestyle relay finals

On Tuesday night, led by Michael Phelps as the anchor, the USA men won the 4×200 freestyle relay – their fourth consecutive gold medal in the event. Their time of seven minutes, 0.66 seconds beat out Great Britain, the 2015 world champions, by two and a half seconds.

Lochte has passed Mark Spitz and Matt Biondi to become the second-most decorated American male swimmer in history behind Phelps, with 12 Olympic medals.

Phelps has reduced his competition schedule in Rio as he focuses on butterfly and relay events.

For his final event in Rio, Dwyer adds a gold to his haul that includes the bronze he won in the 200m freestyle. It was then up to Lochte to maintain USA’s lead and he did just that. The team of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Townley Haas helped United States of America continue its dominance in the event, winning gold since 2000.

This was the fourth straight victory in this event for Phelps and Lochte.

Britain’s Stephen Milne, Duncan Scott, Dan Wallace and James Guy took silver, 2.47sec behind the US, and Japan’s Kosuke Hagino, Naito Ehara, Yuki Kobori and Takeshi Matsuda pocketed bronze, 2.84sec further back.

Tonight, Phelps has the 200m butterfly final – where he’ll try to reclaim his gold from rival Chad le Clos of South Africa – at about 9:25 p.m. ET.
