He was riding with two women on a raft, police said. He was “full of life, loved baseball, basketball, soccer”.

Schlitterbahn officials said all rides are inspected daily before opening.

Kansas City police say the boy who died on the World’s Tallest Water Slide suffered a neck injury.

A statement from the park, Schlitterbahn Kansas City, referred all questions regarding the investigation to police.

Another case, involving the park’s Boogie Bahn surfing ride, was filed in Wyandotte County District Court by Robert Boepple in May 2014. It’s unclear when the last inspection was conducted and what it found.

In March 2014, Linda Stomboly sued the water park after alleging she was seriously injured in August 2012 while riding the park’s King Kaw attraction. The combined weight of passengers must be between 400 and 550 pounds (181 to 249 kg).

The IAAPA puts the chance of being seriously injured on a permanent amusement ride at a US amusement park at 1 in 16 million.

He said he had to grip handles by his legs to hold on and told park staff what happened. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission hasn’t had the power to oversee amusement parks for 35 years, after Congress stripped its authority in 1981 as part of a package of deregulatory budget cuts. The commission declined to comment and did not provide updated public waterslide injury figures on Tuesday.

Amusement park oversight is not regulated federally – instead it’s on a state-by-state basis.

Safety reviews and regulatory compliances fall to various entities.

“They certainly have the knowledge and expertise and they have to be involved in this investigation definitely, since it’s in their best interest as well”, said Pettey, a Democrat.

Such stationary rides are not generally subject to federal oversight. “I don’t see it ever coming into fruition”. Logan claimed she was “severely injured” on August 9, 2014, when she was riding an inner tube with her niece and, at one of the dips in the river, the tube tipped over and her left foot hit a concrete wall. One eyewitness, Leslie Castaneda, said she saw blood and Caleb’s bathing suit in the pool at the end of the ride, reports the The Kansas City Star. One suffered a broken jaw, and the other a broken bone in her face and had to have stitches in her eye, according to the local news station.

A promotional video about building the slide includes footage of two men riding a raft down a half-size test model and going slightly airborne as it crests the top of the first big hill.

Additionally, the boy may not have met the ride’s minimum height requirement of 54 inches.

“It’s terrifying and frightful and terrific”, Holland said in 2014.
