Money game: Phil, Fowler, Spieth add spice to PGA practice

And although Fowler saw how hard it is to win majors when he finished in the top five in all four in 2014, the 26-year-old is looking to adopt the same approach as 18-time major victor Jack Nicklaus. He loves the stage and is poised to win his first major.

Fowler did say he and Phil won the press though, so Mickelson does have that and his jokes to comfort him.

Speaking of winning, Fowler and his model girlfriend Alexis Randock sent the media into a frenzy after they shared a passionate kiss following the world No.7’s victory at The Players Championship in May.

The two-time major victor said part of his preparation for this week’s PGA Championship at Whistling Straits will involve a match between him and buddy Justin Thomas against Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.

The US have not won all four majors in the same year since 1982 and if they were to achieve the feat then it would give them huge confidence heading into next year’s Ryder Cup in Minnesota.

At this point in his career, Phil Mickelson probably enjoys his Tuesday money games of major championship weeks more than the actual tournaments. In the end, however, it was Spieth who got the best of Phil and took the money game.

Jason Day has a fitting venue to play in what’s dubbed the “close but no cigar” grouping at the US PGA Championship. Arnold Palmer had “Arnie’s Army” and Spieth’s youth and success has made him one of the most popular players on tour, especially with young girls. And when gambling, Lefty’s mind games are one of a kind. So we had a good time yesterday. It’s always fun to roll in putts on the other guys. We won the press, if that counts for anything. “It lets you understand “hey, you need to work on this” or “tighten these things up” or ‘hey, just keep doing what you’re doing, you’re good to go.’ Not overthinking it but using it as a tool to get better for the week”.

“I left mine in the locker room here”. And ultimately putting myself in a position going into the weekend to be in contention. “But we would be the underdogs as it stands right now”.

Major No. 1 is still on deck for Rickie Fowler
