Angels designate Tim Lincecum

The Angels bullpen is, to put it mildly, in a state of flux. Shoemaker took the loss against Seattle during his very bad opening month in April, yielding six earned runs in three frames.Paxton was brilliant in a no-decision versus Boston on Monday, surrendering only a solo homer among the four hits he allowed over eight innings.

OUR PICK: The over has cashed in five of the last six meetings between these two teams and is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Seattle. Stanton hit a 504-foot home run, the longest in the majors this season and the longest in Coors Field history, and Suzuki had a pinch-hit infield single in the eighth inning for No. 2,999 career hit.

The poor pitching wasted a vintage Mike Trout performance.

On a night that began with fans chanting the name of Ken Griffey Jr., who had his No. 24 jersey retired in a pregame ceremony, O’Malley heard his own surname being shouted by the sellout crowd of 45,618 when it was over.

The Angels led 6-2.

Los Angeles Angels’ Gregorio Petit, right, looks on as Seattle Mariners catcher Mike Zunino chases the ball after he swung and missed to strike out in the seventh inning of a baseball game Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, in Seattle. It was the first appearance with the Angels for Valdez, who had been claimed on waivers from the Detroit Tigers this summer. Valdez made his big-league debut Saturday, becoming the 25th pitcher used by the team this season.2. Guerra gave up a sacrifice fly to Leonys Martin.

Trout tacked on a triple in the third, and the Angels had their six runs by the fourth inning.

The Seattle bullpen had been an Achilles heel this season, but a series of changes and the emergence of rookie closer Edwin Diaz seem to have shored up that part of the Mariners.

Tim Lincecum’s comeback attempt with the Angels – one phase of it anyway – is over.

Lincecum went 2-6 with a 9.16 ERA in nine starts for the Angels and served up 11 homers in 38 1/3 innings.

The writing was on the wall – manager Mike Scioscia would not commit to Lincecum making another start after another poor outing Friday – and the Angels went ahead and made a move Saturday. “He’s kind of regressed a little bit”. It’s a matter of understanding his mechanics, getting his release point more consistent.

According to Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times, the 32-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment on Saturday to clear a roster spot for reliever Jose Valdez, meaning he’s likely made his last Major League Baseball appearance for the foreseeable future.

“Where Tim is now and where he needs to be obviously there is a gap there”, Scioscia said.

Lincecum left the ballpark Saturday before reporters had the chance to talk to him, but Scioscia said that he handled the news well.

Lincecum, 32, has spent much of the past five years trying to revive his career.

Lincecum’s comeback from hip surgery has hit a road block. Paxton struck out six with one walk in a career-high 8 1/3 innings.

Lincecum went 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 15 starts a year ago after throwing no-hitters against San Diego in July 2013 and June ’14. He opened Friday night’s game, too, with a three-run shot to left-center. Last weekend, the Giants took two of three at home.
