Australia wins first-ever women’s rugby sevens gold medal

Britain’s loss to New Zealand saw two players sin-binned – Katy McLean and Amy Wilson-Hardy – as the tournament’s outstanding player Portia Woodman scored three tries.

Parry added: “When I started the game, women’s rugby in Australia wasn’t very big, it was very much a minority sport”. “There is a good spirit among the players and we are confident we can deliver the goods”. Anyone could have won the tournament today.

‘We’re really big on family, ‘ said Quirk.

“Every time somebody watches women’s sevens, they get amazed by the athletic ability, the skills and the sheer excitement of the game”, said Walsh, the former captain of the Wallabies men’s sevens team. “We kind of compare [rugby] to women’s soccer in the ’80s and ’90s, when it was just starting to really take off”.

Playing well above themselves, the underdogs scored the opening try but the Kiwi side led 12-7 with two minutes to go before Kameli Soejima crossed out wide and Ktsuyuki Sakai nailed a clutch conversion.

New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens says it is devastating to lose Sonny Bill Williams and Joe Webber as they are influential players.

That’s what it looks like when the dream of winning a medal for Canada at the Olympic debut of rugby sevens comes true.

Even without Woodman to start the second half, New Zealand seemed to have Australia pinned in its own half.

Australia, though, then encountered no difficulty against Spain, and the United States – with Super Bowl victor Nate Ebner and rugby’s fastest man Carlin Isles among their try-scorers – saw off Brazil. Doing so may result in civil and/or criminal penalties.

In Pool B, the battle for second is between France and Australia.

“I’d be surprised if he didn’t play sevens again”.

James “Cubby Boi” Davies starred as Team GB beat New Zealand 21-19 to win Pool C of the rugby sevens tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympics and set up a quarter-final against Argentina at 10pm on Wednesday evening.

Until then, he never imagined he’d be in Rio competing for a gold medal. Ghislaine Landry had two tries and Bianca Farella and Kelly Russell had one each.

Within the a year ago, they’ve scored victories over Argentina, England, South Africa, New Zealand and two-time defending Sevens Series champion Fiji – all of whom are regarded as global rugby powers. Australia recovered from its opening loss to beat Spain 26-12, but faces South Africa next.

Not long after Williams’ exit, his teammates left the Deodoro Stadium with their heads down, having lost to Japan for the first time in rugby sevens.
