Cowboys in Cali: Jones says Rams on board despite LA return

However, the Cowboys may decide to go with one of the quarterbacks they have on the roster to be the teams backup quarterback.

Since his injury, rumors have swirled around this team with many National Football League experts expecting the front office to trade for a veteran, but the latest reports have Jerry Jones taking the wait and see approach, hoping rookie Dak Prescott or youngster Jameill Showers can step up and show they are capable of leading this offense if Romo is injured again.

Now, Jones is impressed at how Prescott and Showers have adjusted during the team’s practice held over the weekend.

“I’m more encouraged after this about holding our pat hand on a veteran than before this”, Jones said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Jones noted that both Prescott and Showers played well during their practices. They looked comfortable and they reacted well when you got a little pressure. It was good for everyone to see. But he also liked what he saw in the scrimmage. “They need to practice”, Garrett said. “They were in different situations, some red zone and two minutes stuff that I thought, again, they handled it really well. There was a poise and a calm to their presence that I really thought was pretty good, and they will certainly grow from it”.

The Cowboys have since focused on the development of Prescott and/or Showers after not wanting to overpay in terms of draft-pick compensation or otherwise. That plan has just been advanced by a year or so.

What would make that even harder to judge is the fact that Romo most likely won’t see the field much at all, since the team will be more concerned with him entering the season healthy than him getting some snaps in meaningless games.

Neither Showers or Prescott have ever thrown a pass in an National Football League game. Team owner Jerry Jones then wanted to get Nick Foles but the Kansas City Chiefs managed to sign him up.
