U.S. women hoops rout Senegal 121-56 in record fashion

If the United States continues their scoring bombardment, they may threaten the 1996 U.S. Olympic team’s scoring record of 102.4 points per game. She actually enjoys it. Maya Moore was especially ferocious for the Red, White and Blue, nabbing three steals to add to her 9 points and 4 rebounds.

In their Olympic debuts, Brittney Griner and Elena Delle Donne each made an impact.

Griner was big at the worlds, earning all-tournament honors.

Team USA is 2-0 in group play and looks to avoid that upset and improve their record to 3-0 against Serbia on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.

“Real unselfish basketball”, Brittney Griner said in a television interview after the game. “I don’t want to say it turns into just another game, but it turns into just basketball. If you ask the players, they wouldn’t mind playing every day”.

From top to bottom this version of the American Olympic women’s basketball team is stacked with offensive weapons.

Head coach Geno Auriemma has talked about the desire to get the US playing a more three-point oriented game, and his wish was Diana Taurasi’s command. The contest was a rematch of the 2014 world championship gold medal game that the Americans won by 13 points. Most importantly, she stayed out of foul trouble again, keeping her arms high and straight with her feet planted because she really doesn’t have to jump much.

“She’s a newcomer to the Olympics, but certainly not to worldwide basketball”, coach Geno Auriemma said. She ran fewer than 13 minutes in the team’s win over Senegal.

Breanna Stewart, having just finished her collegiate career at the University of CT playing for Team USA coach Geno Auriemma, also made her first Olympic appearance. The four-time NCAA champion leads the USA with 12 free throw attempts.

Team USA probably has the most talent its ever had, and they only have one true point guard in Sue Bird.

“Their youth and I guess their lack of worldwide experience is the one area, but that will come with time”. Taurasi is still arguably the best player in the world, and Griner is its most intimidating shot-blocker. “When they come in it just keeps rolling”. There’s some stuff to clean up before Wednesday afternoon’s clash with Serbia; it wasn’t a ideal performance. The U.S. took Tuesday off after playing back-to-back days.

But the US women were more effective throughout, blasting Spain 103-63.

But he said Cuban and the team have been “first class” in their dealings with him. “They are all so unique and talented”.
