Man shot while trying to rescue missing hiker is stable

A man who was shot while searching for an elderly hiker has been rescued after being lost in a remote canyon. The patient’s condition was not immediately clear and police did not release the victim’s identity.

Agencies from Placer County, the Grass Valley Police Department, Yuba County and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, among others, are assisting the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Royal said.

Schmidt said it was unclear what prompted the shooting.

SWAT teams were scouring a remote canyon in northern California early Wednesday after a search-and-rescue volunteer was shot while hunting for a missing hiker, officials said. A motive in the shooting was not known.

The hiker has been missing for five days and is not believed to have any involvement in the shooting.

The search and rescue group was west of the community of Washington searching for a missing 75-year-old man when around 6:30 p.m. the group heard two shots.

Teams with both the Nevada and Placer County Sheriff’s Departments are still searching for the shooter.

The incident happened Tuesday night near Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park, near the town of Washington, where search and rescue were out looking for a missing 74-year-old man.

The suspect shot and wounded a volunteer rescuer in the hip Tuesday.

The victim was airlifted to the hospital, Sgt.
