The 27-year-old led from start to finish to win the gruelling multi-stroke event in a time of two minutes 06.58 seconds, just 0.46 outside the world record she set at last year’s world championships in Russian Federation. However, she missed her world record of 2:06.12.

The years between 2012 and 2016 comprised a series of unbelievable wins for Ledecky, who will begin matriculation at Stanford University in the fall. She finished a disappointing 13th in the semifinals. She placed fourth at the 2015 world championships in the 200 IM and, with an extra burst Tuesday, made the podium. The feat won her a second Olympics gold.
