Hillary Clinton launched fresh attacks on Donald Trump’s business record and temperament on Monday, casting the businessman as a cheat who has repeatedly “stiffed” American workers and a person who appears to take “pleasure” in attacking protesters, journalists and a Gold Star family.
“Whatever she’s being paid needs to be doubled”, said her co-panelist Larry Sabato, director of the Virginia Center for politics.
Trump’s “Second Amendment” remarks was criticised by several lawmakers, former national security officials and media.
Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, agreed.
Priorities USA, a super PAC – expenditure-only committee – supporting Mrs Clinton, said Mr Trump had “suggested that someone shoot Hillary Clinton”.
Writing about political figures who have reluctantly endorsed Trump, he said, “Many have tried to do a side-shuffle and issue statements saying they strongly disagree with his rhetoric but still support the candidate”.
“Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment”.
“Clinton is good for the United States versus Donald Trump”, he said.
Trump said: “Nobody in that room thought anything other than what you just said”.
The Trump campaign quickly got down to the business of what they seem to be doing best these days; putting out fires for the Man Himself.
Trump’s campaign sought to quell the controversy with a statement that blamed the “dishonest media” for misinterpretation.
At a press conference in Wisconsin on Tuesday night, after beating his heavily pro-Trump opponent by close to 70 points, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said that while he had not heard the comments, what he did hear sounded like a bad joke.
The Secret Service followed up with a brief tweet about Trump’s comments.
It was not clear whether Trump was inciting gun owners to use their weapons against judges or a sitting president – or was encouraging some other action. “You have the power to campaign against her”.
“These are 50 people that have been running our country forever and they said ‘we can’t support Donald Trump, ‘” Trump said.
The 30-second NRA ad, which was paid for by NRA Political Victory Fund, shows the back of a woman who looks like Clinton walking onto a private airplane while what looks to be the US Secret Service surrounds her.
