Astros outfielder Carlos Gomez designated for assignment

The Carlos Gomez era with the Houston Astros has reached its end. Colby Rasmus is on the disabled list with an ear problem.

Gomez and starting pitcher Mike Fiers arrived from Milwaukee the day before the non-waiver trade deadline a year ago for four prospects, none of whom have reached the major leagues with the Brewers yet. Gomez played for the Twins for two seasons (2008-09) and then was traded to Milwaukee. Flores cried during the game when he heard about the impending deal.

This could very well be an indication that Gomez is willing to accept the assignment and clear his head in the minors.

The Mets pivoted and traded for Cespedes, who led them to the World Series. Over the course of his 85 appearances thus far into the 2016 regular season, he has batted just.210 with five home runs and 29 RBI to coincide with his underwhelming.272 on-base percentage. He is in the final season of a 3-year, $24 million contract that is paying him $9 million this year. “Playing time’s always a sensitive issue, but I’m trying to put out the best team we can to win tonight’s game”, Hinch tells Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle.

“This has nothing to do with Carlos’ effort”, Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters before the team’s game against the Minnesota Twins.

One day after saying Reyes was still feeling discomfort swinging from the right side, the Mets on Wednesday announced that the 33-year-old will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday night at Brooklyn.
