Wenger faces a host of problems in defence confirming Gabriel will be out for at least six weeks.

Arsenal came from behind to beat Manchester City 3-2 in their final pre-season match in Gothenburg but suffered a defensive blow with Gabriel being carried off on a stretcher late on.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has held the top job at Emirates Stadium since 1996, so he could be forgiven for treating retirement from football with some trepidation. While the transfer window certainly is inflated at the moment, you should and need to pay what the market asks.

Wenger, speaking at the Premier League launch day in London, also said that he realised his tenure might be coming to an end soon.

“Compare that with a player who has been educated here, who has had Champions League for 17 years, who has not known anything else”.

Wenger said on Sky Sports News: “It’s a very exciting season, there are so many ambitions out there”.

After years of trying to convince the Arsenal manager that he can lead the line, Walcott backtracked last week by saying he wants to be known for playing on the right wing.

“But if you play for a team in the lower leagues and watch Real Madrid or Barcelona on Wednesday nights you think: ‘I’d love to play in games like that'”.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels the Premier League is more competitive than ever due to the presence of the best managers in the world, but is adamant it is still the players that make the difference.

“Hopefully, I can try to get as many goals and assists as I can”.

“He went through a very tough time not being at the Euros with England, and I observed him, saw how he responded and am convinced that he will have a great season”.

“For example, in the last 10 minutes Aleix Garcia Serrano made good possession with Yaya Toure and Kevin De Bruyne and we created clear chances”.
