Michael Chernus brings the Tinkerer to Spider-Man: Homecoming

An inventor who creates weapons for supervillains, the Tinkerer is one of the earliest Spider-Man villains, having first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #2, and has always been rumored to be one of the film’s villains.

The Vulture was confirmed at Comic-Con with some concept art (with Michael Keaton expected to be filling the role of Adrian Toomes), and now Deadline is reporting that Michael Chernus (Captain Phillips, Orange Is the New Black) has joined the cast of the film as Phineas Mason, better known as the engineering genius The Tinkerer.

Are you excited to see Chernus potentially play the Tinkerer?

Michael Keaton plays the film’s main villain, Vulture, but as we learned at Comic-Con, Vulture’s suit is entirely tech-based. Now that Marvel and Sony are working together on the Spider-Man franchise, they’re taking everything back to the drawing board.

Plus, we can all agree it’s nice for a SPIDER-MAN movie to not have to do anything with the Green Goblin or Oscorp for awhile. “This is the ground level of the Marvel Universe”.

Aside from the acclaimed Netflix series, you’ve seen Chernus in Captain Philips and The Bourne Legacy. The film also stars Donald Glover, Martin Starr, Michael Barbieri, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Angourie Rice, Jacob Batalon, Tyne Daly, and Bokeem Woodbine.

It certainly seems as though Spider-Man might be a bit more comedic in tone than the most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, which would be in keeping with the high school setting, teen-centric story, and overall John Hughes vibe that director Jon Watts has been teasing.
