A witness said the shooter was targeting the vehicle that hit the man.

Shots were fired shortly after the incident as screaming onlookers surrounded the injured man and others chased the vehicle.
In the footage captured by frequent protester Heather De Mian, a man is standing in the middle of the street right before a auto strikes him.
Gunfire broke out after a auto mowed down a protester in Ferguson, Missouri on the second anniversary of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown.
Protesters in Ferguson, Missouri reverted into a violent mob last night when a woman accidentally hit a protester who stepped in front of her vehicle. Her identity was not released, but she was reportedly not injured in the incident, despite bullet holes in her auto. Officials said, “All evidence supports her account of not seeing a person standing in the street, until it was too late to stop before hitting them”.
The Post-Dispatch reported that the extent of the injuries to the protester was unknown because he was taken from the scene in a private vehicle.
By around 10 p.m., the protesters had disbanded. And no arrests have been made.
Earlier that day, close to a hundred people gathered along Canfield Drive, the same spot Brown was fatally shot by officer Darren Wilson, after an altercation on August 9, 2014.
Brown’s shooting by then-Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson stirred protests and riots after various narratives emerged about the circumstances. Brown’s death also triggered mass protests across the United States and ignited a national debate on racial inequality and the use of excessive force in the policing of minority communities, giving a major boost to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Brown’s father, also named Michael Brown, said in a brief speech during the memorial service that the anniversary was a sad day for him and his family, and for the world, too.
