Conway had come agonisingly close to beating Colombian judo legend Yuri Alvear to make it into the gold medal match, but despite dominating the bout just couldn’t score – and ended up losing out to a “golden score” from the three-times world champion.

Conway punched the air after being declared the victor of the bronze medal – a remarkable achievement for the Team GB judo star.

The 29-year-old, from Bristol, gave a good account of herself against Yuri Alvear of Colombia in the semi-final but lost by waza-ari before quickly returning to battle for bronze. I’m so happy I was able to do that. I didn’t have time to think.

Earlier in a day rich in British medals, Piers Morgan had been embroiled in a rolling Twitter spat with assorted Olympians after saying that he could not get excited about silver and bronze hues. “At the start of the day I was very nervous and wondering what today might hold but as the day has gone on I have enjoyed it more and more”.

Conway, who was knocked out at the last-16 stage in the same category at London 2012, raised her hands above her head in delight at the end. I knew if I was going to come away with a medal I would have to put in my best performances.

“Tokyo 2020 is not out of the question, we will see, but I will enjoy this moment and see afterwards”. Believe you’re up there with the best.
