The security sources had initially said five soldiers had been killed and eight wounded.

The authorities believe both blasts have been carried out by the PKK, a Turkish official said. Since that time, clashes killed more than 600 Turkish military and police officers, and about 5,000 Kurdish rebels.

The attacks came hours after an earlier attack, also blamed on the PKK, killed four soldiers and injured nine others near the border with Iraq.

Two civilians were killed and 50 others wounded when a roadside bomb was detonated by PKK militants in Kiziltepe district of Mardin province, according to an official.

The PKK, or Kurdistan Workers’ Party, have continually aimed their attacks at the police who are closely aligned with President Erdogan’s government.

Last summer, the shaky ceasefire between Turkish forces and the PKK collapsed, and the group resumed frequent attacks against Turkish military and police.

The blast in Kızıltepe, south of Mardin city, was apparently set off by a bomb which exploded outside a state-run hospital as a police vehicle passed.

Turkey’s operations began in the wake of a deadly July 2015 bombing in Suruc, which the Turkish government blamed on the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group.
