Adam Peaty’s grandmother is the cutest Olympic supporter

Peaty, 21, smashed the world record he set in the heats to win the 100m breaststroke in 57.13 seconds, more than a second ahead of the next placed swimmer.

Peaty’s grandmother, 74, has found fans across the world for her sweet and encouraging messages of support on Twitter and has received the nickname #OlympicNan.

There was a lot of excitement on day two of the 2016 Olympics as Great Britain claimed its first two medals in the space of 10 minutes – thanks to a gold for Adam Peaty and silver for Jazz Carlin in the pool.

Footage of the moment showed Ms Williams shouting: “Yes!”

The medal was Team GB’s first of the Rio Games and their first men’s Olympic swimming gold since 1988, and Peaty insists that there is more to come from him. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Issue date: Monday August 8, 2016.

Famously, he made a decision to get serious about his sport four years ago when he watched his pal, Craig Benson, racing at the Olympics.

He beat his own world record in the Rio Olympics with a time of 57.13 secs.

Tweeting her congratulations to the victor and his coach, Melanie Marshall, she wrote: “Well you have done it @adam_peaty you have made it, your hard work paid off. Congratulations to you and @massivemel”. From asking her window-cleaner to put up union flag bunting on her bungalow to suggesting she was “so proud I could burst” Mavis could soon threaten Dame Edna Everage’s status as the world’s most endearing senior citizen.

As Peaty cruised through the semifinals, Williams upped her Twitter game, calling her grandson a “gladiator” and saying she’d be “roaring” for him. “Hopefully, I’ve done her proud”.

“I stayed up to watch the races and I just thought it was awesome”, said City of Sunderland swimming club member Jonathan.

“He is very good at turning threats to opportunities”, Moorhouse said.

“I’m not going to settle for this”. He did not so much see off the assembled field in the aquatics centre as swamp them with his sheer class and irresistible power.

“I can’t really explain my feelings right now. I never thought it could work out this well”.

Lovatt, who spoke to Peaty shortly after his win, described him as “calm” and “dedicated”, adding that his down-to-earth personality meant success was unlikely to go to his head.

He returned to social media a few hours later, posting a picture of himself in the pool with eyes shut and arms outstretched seconds after taking gold.

“She’s a great nan”.

“I’m ready for Rio now thanks to my kind window cleaner who put my bunting up”, she tweeted.

Peaty is coached by Mel Marshall, a former European and Commonwealth champion whose Olympic hopes in the 2004 Games failed to come true. She didn’t have to get me pumped up because I knew this arena would be absolutely flawless for me. “I like the dark undertow of grime and it gets me aggressive”.

And Mavis revealed she nearly nodded off moments before Adam romped home to Olympic glory with an astonishing time of 57.13 sec. “He’s been swimming ever since”.
