Rio Olympics 2016: The ‘Final Five’ Win Gold at All-Around Team Finals

Between their insane athleticism and adorable outfits, America fell in love with the Final Five gymnasts as they dominated in the women’s all-around team final on Tuesday, August 9, and took home the gold. Boorman and Martha Karolyi, USA Gymnastics national team coordinator, were unsure if Simone could complete the tricky move, but she boosted their faith by landing it 95 percent of the time.

It was the second consecutive Olympic team gold for Raisman and the U.S., whose team members nicknamed themselves the “Final Five”.

Brestyan has worked as the personal coach to the Olympian for years, seeing her through her last Olympics in 2012 as well. However, starting at the 2020 Tokyo Games, the International Gymnastics Federation has announced the team will consist of only four members. “I’m not sentimental, but when Aly told me the name of the team is the Final Five, that is the moment”.

The team of Simone Biles, 19, Laurie Hernandez, 16, Aly Raisman, 22, Gabby Douglas, 20, and Madison Kocian, 19, racked up the highest total score on every apparatus to take the team gold over silver medalists Russian Federation by the largest margin in history.

Biles will also compete in vault, beam and floor exercise, while Raisman will compete on floor, Hernandez on beam, and Kocian and Douglas in uneven bars.
