Two Officers Shot Near Fort Smith, Arkansas

Pevehouse tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that one sheriff’s deputy and one Hackett Police Department officer were shot. A hospital offical told 40/29 News that the two officers were taken to Sparks Medical Center.

An Arkansas deputy was killed and a police chief wounded during a standoff Wednesday.

Officials have identified the suspect as 34-year-old Billy Jones of Greenwood, Arkansas, 5News reports.

Cooper, who was on the verge of retirement at age 65, died in surgery from a neck wound, Hollenbeck said.

Jones is also said to have shot and disabled a police robot that was being used to confirm Jones was inside the home where he was holding officers at bay.

James Markward, who lives nearby, said he heard commotion early Wednesday morning in the area, which is about 115 miles west of Little Rock.

The shooting happened near Highway 253, in the area where Boone and Mockingbird Lane are. A few minutes later, Spells was grazed by a bullet, he said. In the commotion, a police dog was shot and ran into the woods and remained missing later Wednesday. It seems [he had] full intent to inflict violence against us.

When the deputies and officers arrived, they quickly reported that the son had an assault-style rifle and body armor and that they were met by rifle fire, Hollenbeck said.

Eventually, he surrendered, reportedly waving a white flag out of a window, walking out with his hands raised and laying down on the ground to be handcuffed. He waved a white towel out the window, walked out of the home with his hands up, and laid down on the ground to be handcuffed, authorities at the scene said. After he was apprehended, investigators called in a bomb squad after learning that he had some kind of license to work with explosives.

He was treated and released, Hollenbeck said.

Jones’ criminal record shows he was previously arrested in 2016 for possession of firearms for certain persons and possession of a controlled substance.

Deputy Cooper was employed with the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office since 2001.
