Rodriguez, who is set to play his final game for the Yankees at home on Friday before being released, got into Wednesday’s win as a pinch hitter and is expected to play a bigger role in the finale.Rodriguez flied out in his lone plate appearance on Wednesday but NY managed to even the series at one win apiece by picking on the Red Sox bullpen for five runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth en route to a 9-4 triumph. Wright was injured Sunday night in Los Angeles when he pinch ran for Ortiz and jammed his shoulder while diving to second base on a fake pickoff attempt. “That’s what it’s always about here”.

The 23-year-old and first-time All-Star entered the night batting.310 with 23 home runs and 74 RBIs.

Fans chanted “We want A-Rod’!’ late in the game”.

“My heart sunk a little bit when I saw it, but fortunately, I just saw him back there”, Dombrowski said.

Girardi said he “made a mistake” by saying on Sunday that if Rodriguez wanted to play in all remaining games before his release that he would try to get him in the games. A-Rod said Tuesday that this start would be “a great chance to give me one big, loud boo on the way out”.

The Yankees got insurance in the eighth when Gary Sanchez hit his first major league home run.

“Any time you lose a guy that’s going to the Hall of Fame, that’s going to hurt pretty bad”, said Betts, his calf hurting less than it did when he awoke Wednesday but troublesome nonetheless. I felt much better that he’s OK. “It’s hard. Believe me, it’s really hard”. “It’s part of the job, I guess”.

Girardi explained further that Boston was in the AL East race and Tampa Bay was out of it, justifying his decision to start Rodriguez on Friday.

Red Sox: OF Chris Young (strained right hamstring) is scheduled to start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket. John Farrell said after the game that Ortiz had been hit in that area twice in recent days. Farrell said that Betts is day-to-day, but that he was doubtful for Thursday’s game.
