“Congratulations to my friend and teammate Ichiro on joining the 3000 hit club”, Jeter, who played parts of three seasons with Ichiro as members of the New York Yankees, said in a statement. I can’t tell you how many times he told me he’d like to see him in a Yankees uniform.

Suzuki was hitless in his first three at-bats of the game before he tagged Chris Rusin. “Show him his respect, show him that we respect his milestone”.

Of the players who have reached 3,000 hits, none have done it quite like Suzuki. Of the 30 players on the list, Suzuki is just the fourth born outside the 50 states. He joins Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rico), Rod Carew (Panama) and Rafael Palmeiro (Cuba).

Among the 30 players to have amassed 3,000 or more hits, Ichiro’s average WAR per season from his Major League debut through Sunday is 3.84, per Fangraphs.

Mariners 3, Angels 1: James Paxton took a four-hitter into ninth inning before he was forced from the game after being hit on the left arm by a line drive, and Seattle beat Los Angeles.

Kawamura, who now serves as the manager of Ichiro’s former youth team, said Ichiro could throw harder and run faster than his peers, even as a young child. “To have that special moment to share with the fans there, I don’t have any words how grateful I am”. Miami hasn’t been to the postseason since 2003, and Suzuki has made it only twice in his 16-year career.

“I want to pay tribute to him for setting the shining record in Japanese and USA baseball”, Suga said.

Suzuki nearly instantly shattered the old perceptions, leading directly to the signings of several more players from Japan, including Hideki Matsui by the New York Yankees, Kazuo Matsui by the New York Mets and Kosuke Fukudome by the Chicago Cubs. Everything he does is a tribute to the game of baseball the way it’s supposed to be played.

Suzuki got his 2,999th hit Saturday night as a pinch-hitter. The hit was the 3,000th in S.

Combining his Japanese and MLB numbers gives him 4,278 hits for his entire baseball career.

Suzuki gave the crowd a wave as he went into the dugout. More than the number (3,000), you saw how my teammates came out. “There are still very few”, Suzuki said.

“Don’t compare that to me”, Suzuki said with genuine modesty. We’re not there yet.

Before Suzuki signed with the Mariners, the only Japanese players considered good enough to excel in the majors were pitchers. Rockies’ players stood and applauded at the dugout rail. “Hopefully this did that and bring that closer”. He led the American League in hits seven times, and he led the majors in steals in 2001.

With this latest accomplishment, punters and bookmakers have gone back to the drawing board to begin their speculation on who will be the next member of the 3,000-mile club.
