Jackson solid, Jankowski steals home and Padres beat Bucs

It helped the Padres take home a 4-0 victory over the Pirates.

“If there’s a blessing in disguise of getting hit, it’s the fact that I got to deal with (Pirates pitching coach) Ray Searage every day for two months”, Vogelsong said.

Taillon will make start No. 10 Thursday afternoon against the San Diego Padres after going 2-2 with a 3.29 ERA, 43 strikeouts and only six walks in 52 innings during his first nine starts. It’s hard to say if the Pirates are even in a position high enough from which they can collapse this year, but the Padres could easily join the list of teams the Bucs let get by in a crucial part of the schedule.

It was the fourth time the Padres had a straight steal of home this season, and the second by Jankowski.

Since being called up July 17 from Triple-A El Paso, Jackson has recorded quality starts in four of five outings. “I was able to mix my pitches up and locate them”. The Miami Marlins released him June 2.

Jankowski detected that reliever Antonio Bastardo wasn’t watching him closely as the left-hander focused on his matchup with Alex Dickerson, so he took off for the plate and scored as catcher Eric Fryer fumbled Bastardo’s hurried throw home.

Jankowski is a former compensatory first-round pick (44th overall, so not really the real first round but before the second) who has always flashed good stolen base skills in the minors and is now showing great on-base ability at the big-league level. “That caught me by surprise”.

Jankowski was 2 for 4 with a double and was the only player on either side with multiple hits. Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer each added a scoreless inning of relief to seal the shutout victory.

Jackson struck out seven and walked three, showing improvement from the time he did throw a no-hitter, finishing with just the two hits allowed in seven innings. Pirates rookie RHP Tyler Glasnow (shoulder) pitched a three-inning simulated game Tuesday at PNC Park. The Pirates held out 1B John Jaso, who bruised and blackened an eye during a collision at the plate Tuesday. Pirates C Chris Stewart (knee) begins a rehabilitation assignment Friday at Double-A Altoona. Taillon did not get a decision last time out in a 3-1 win versus Cincinnati with a run allowed in six frames.
