Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu filled a glaring gap in her resume Saturday, making her first Olympic medal a gold – with a stunning world record to boot.
Hosszu sued “Swimming World” in an Arizona court a year ago after the magazine published an opinion piece in which former Canadian swimmer Casey Barrett asked: “Are Katinka Hosszu’s performances being aided?”
After winning her opening heat in the 400m IM, Hosszu set the stage for what would be a historic performance in the final.
In the 200 butterfly, he touched the wall in one minute, 53.36 seconds to beat Japan’s Masato Sakai by 0.04 seconds, with Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi taking the bronze.
“I have been racing so much in the past four years that that was kind of my goal that when we get to Rio it would kind of be second nature and it really feels that way”. He spoke less than 24 hours after being criticized for calling the coach and husband of Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu “the guy responsible” for a career turnaround that led to her gold medal swim on Saturday.
It was still below the 36 million viewers NBC had for the corresponding Sunday at the 2012 London Games.
Semifinal – Women’s 200m Individual Medley Semifinals – Olympic Aquatics Stadium – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 08/08/2016. She also owns the 2015 World Championship in this event. “Having three so far is really just a bonus”.
“I know I can go faster, going faster is what brings excitement for me”.
Katinka Hosszú of Hungary won gold in the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the 2016 Rio Olympics with a time of 2:06.68, setting an Olympic record.
“I never took performance-enhancing substances”, Hosszu said in an interview with Reuters past year.
“I’ve been swimming for 16 years and to have it come to this is just a dream come true”, – a predictably thrilled Murphy said after breaking the Olympic record.
If the online response to Tusup’s joyous reaction is anything to go by, it seems a man who publicly backs his wife this passionately is sadly an anomaly.

She opened her campaign with a world record-shattering triumph in the 400m IM – grabbing her first Olympic medal and expunging the memory of a 2012 London campaign in which she said she succumbed to confidence-sapping nerves.
