Medal rush for Team GB at Rio Olympics

Team USA continues to collect medals in Rio ahead in the overall and gold medal competitions thanks to some Olympic newcomers in the gym and some veterans in the pool.

Women’s basketball prelims continue, as team US takes on Serbia in search of its 44th straight Olympic victory. I never knew I would have boat friends.

Team USA plays Australia (2-0) on Wednesday at 6 PM ET.

It was a different story in the second, when the Americans reeled off 13 straight points in one stretch to take control. The Aussies, featuring five National Basketball Association players, four of them league champions, improved to 2-0 on Monday with an impressive 95-80 win over Serbia. The United States has won Olympic gold at each stop since 1992 Barcelona.

Carmelo Anthony, playing in his US record 25th Olympic game, helped to turn the momentum midway in the second quarter.

Carmelo Anthony’s 10-point second quarter ultimately helped Team USA restore order, while also enabling Anthony to pass Michael Jordan as the third-leading scorer in U.S. Olympic history. Anthony then trailed Irving up the floor, accepted a feed on the wing and knocked down a 3-pointer that lifted some of the pressure and fog off Team USA.

Paul George scored a team-high 20 points for Team USA, followed by Jimmy Butler (17) Durant (16), Anthony (14) and DeAndre Jordan (14).

Peter Kauzer finished second behind Clarke to give Slovenia their first silver of the Games and their second medal overall, while Jiri Prskavec’s bronze in the men’s kayak single was the Czech Republic’s first medal overall this year. US Women’s Basketball, who have scored more than 100 points in each of their past two games, will take on a winless Serbia. When the US did get out and push the pace, their decision making was often subpar as they looked for the highlight play rather than the easy one.

The shot-making of John Cox – cousin of Kobe Bryant – is the backbone of this team, which had to make you smile if you were still watching late in the third quarter.
