PSC Promotes National 811 Day – Call Before You Dig

Every digging project requires a call to 811, and Thursday, 8/11, is the day to educate people about that. Installing a post for a mailbox, building a deck or planting a tree are examples of projects that homeowners neglect to call 811 before starting, putting themselves and others close by in danger.

811 can be called from anywhere in the country. Hitting an underground utility line while digging can cause serious injuries, disrupt service to entire neighborhoods, and potentially result in fines and fix costs. Even properties that are not served by a particular service may still have utility lines running below ground.

Calling 811 connects homeowners and contractors to Dig Safe, Inc., the local one-call center, which notifies gas, electric, telephone and cable companies of the intended digging project. The utilities will then mark their underground facilities. The depth of utility lines varies and lines can move when the ground freezes and thaws or when an area receives a large amount of rain. Once lines have been accurately marked, you or your contractor can begin digging safely.
