Owner Arte Moreno effectively sided with Scioscia and Dipoto made a decision to leave. Dipoto, who was attempting to provide more data-driven analysis in Los Angeles before his departure, will now join Boston’s front office, which has been put into question over the past couple of seasons. Whether DiPoto advances through the organization or grabs a role with more prominence is TBD – but this is a nice low risk move for Boston. Dipoto qualifies.

Dipoto, 47, will consult with Red Sox general manager Ben Cherrington for at least the next several months.
Larry Lucchino recently announced he was stepping down as team president and CEO at the end of the season.
Neither contract came to fruition during DiPoto’s tenure as the team missed the postseason in both 2012 and 2013 before falling to the Kansas City Royals in a three-game sweep in the 2014 ALDS.
The top priority for the Red Sox this offseason figures to be building a competent rotation and improving the bullpen. With Boston’s emphasis on statistical analytics, the New Jersey native appears to be a flawless fit for the Red Sox’ system of determining which players to approach in free agency.

Believing the Angels needed to stock up on young, major league-ready pitching, Dipoto traded second baseman and cleanup batter Howie Kendrick to the Dodgers for left-hander Andrew Heaney, and sent backup catcher Hank Conger to Houston for right-hander Nick Tropeano last winter. There is no shortage of problems that need fixing in Boston.
