Almost one-fifth of registered Republicans want Donald Trump to drop out of the race for the White House, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday, reflecting the turmoil his candidacy has sown within his party.

Hillary Clinton continued to attack Donald Trump over comments the Republican candidate made suggesting that his supporters should turn to violence to protect the Second Amendment.

The U.S. Secret Service, which provides security details for both Trump and Clinton and rarely comments on political matters, when asked for a response on Trump, said: “The Secret Service is aware of the comment”.

The Trump campaign declined to comment on what the Secret Service official told CNN.

Despite Trump’s camp later saying it was a tongue-in-cheek remark others took to Twitter to voice their concern.

GOP Congressmen Mike Coffman, Scott Tipton, and Ken Buck did not respond to 9NEWS after numerous requests for comment.

With a seat now open on the nine-justice US Supreme Court, he said that Clinton would appoint a jurist who would weaken the Second Amendment. The amendment preserves the right of citizens to keep and bear arms.

“Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know”, Trump said.

About one-fifth of registered Republicans said they want Trump to drop his presidential bid entirely.

“A person seeking to the be president of the United States should not suggest violence in any way”, Mook said. “This is a strong political movement, the Second Amendment”, Trump told Fox News.

Nearly immediately after Trump spoke, the pro-Clinton superPAC Priorities USA Action emailed out a clip of Trump’s comments with the subject heading, “Donald Trump Just Suggested That Someone Shoot Hillary Clinton”, plus a one-sentence message: “THIS IS NOT OK”. What matters is what the unhinged among his supporters, who are carrying more than pitchforks, thought they heard him say.

Shortly after his speech on Monday, the Secret Service tweeted the following message from its official account. “Very rarely do you see politicians mentioning the second amendment, violence, and a candidate in the same sentence”, he told CTV News Channel from Washington.

Clinton seemed to be ready to riff on the incident in Iowa, telling the crowd, “Some people get a little carried away, have you noticed that?”
