Djokovic makes return in Montreal event

The 28-year-old will play his elder brother and 2015 Wimbledon finalist, Jamie Murray, for the first time in an ATP World Tour match.

With Roger Federer not playing in Montreal, Murray is the second seed behind Djokovic in the singles competition. The French Open is the only Grand Slam championship that has eluded Djokovic in his career. He’s back in action at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal, taking the court for the first time since he defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon on July 12.

Two-time champion Andy Murray was on in the evening but rain halted his match with Tommy Robredo at 4-4. All of his losses have come against tough competition, suffering just one defeat against a player that isn’t now ranked in the top five.

However, Robredo won three games on the spin to level matters before the heavens opened, much to the chagrin of the Spaniard, a former world No.5.

“Match could have gone either way, honestly, especially in the second set”, Djokovic told reporters after battling Bellucci for an hour and 50 minutes. Lleyton is very kind to take time away from his family and his career to help me and Thanassi (Kokkinakis). It was not a great match, but I didn’t play bad. Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga handled Borna Coric 6-4, 6-4 and Lukas Rosol scored the lone seed upset on the day knocking out No. 12 Kevin Anderson 7-6, 7-6.

He advanced to a second-round meeting with third-seeded Stan Wawrinka, who he fell to in their only meeting earlier this year on a grass court.

Kyrgios has not played since losing his only singles rubber in Davis Cup play last month after finishing a turbulent Wimbledon fortnight which was marred by outbursts and controversy from his side.

Elsewhere, Serena Williams shook off some hard-court rust before rolling to a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Italy’s Flavia Pennetta. He’s got a big everything – forehand, backhand. I’ve got to serve well. “If the Scot were to win the title in Canada, he would reach a total of 8660 points, 595 points more than the Swiss”. That would mean a match in the final because Murray is the No. 2 seed and is in the opposite half of the draw from Djokovic.
