Soberanes fire burns almost 70000 acres, containment at 55%

The Soberanes fire, in the coastal Big Sur tourism hotspot, has incinerated 105 square miles (270 square kilometers) of the Los Padres National Forest since it started more than two weeks ago.

Since igniting July 22, the wildfire burning between Carmel Valley and Big Sur has destroyed 57 homes and resulted in one fatality.

The fire is now 50 percent contained.

Cal Fire asked for the public’s help, and asked any potential witnesses to come forward as investigators attempted to figure out who built the 2-foot by 2-foot campfire.

A forest fire in Southern California’s San Bernardino Mountains has grown to almost 11 square miles.

The U.S. Forest Service says the 12-square-mile blaze is 64 percent contained Wednesday and is expected to be fully surrounded by Sunday.

More than 1,700 firefighters are on the lines. About 410 homes remained threatened.

A fire burning in steep terrain in central California is growing and has now scorched almost 8 square miles.

“We had a large firing out operation on the south and east side of the fire, and that was all back burns”, said Hugo Patino, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

More than 4,800 fire personnel are now assigned to the fire. And a Fresno County blaze called the Mineral Fire has burned 6,952 acres and is 15 percent contained.
