“I was really chuffed to get bronze four years ago. Of course I would have liked to have been in with a chance of going for gold but I gave it everything that I had today and at the end of the day I have to be happy with that.” said the disappointed Froome.
His late inclusion followed a spate of crashes in last Saturday’s road race prompted the withdrawals of Australia’s Richie Porte and Vincenzo Nibali of Italy.
There were bronze medals for gymnast Max Whitlock, shooter Steven Scott, Tour de France cycling champion Chris Froome, and judo’s Sally Conway. He jumped off the bike early during the road race so that he wouldn’t aggravate the injury and has pronounced himself ready to compete. Dumoulin pulled out of the road race on Sunday after just a few minutes still nursing a broken wrist.
