Cancellara’s perfect ending leaves Froome stuck in bronze age
Va Va Froome, looking to emulate Sir Bradley Wiggins’ feat of Tour de France triumph and Olympic time trial gold at London 2012, could only manage a bronze medal against the clock here.

“I was really chuffed to get bronze four years ago. Of course I would have liked to have been in with a chance of going for gold but I gave it everything that I had today and at the end of the day I have to be happy with that.” said the disappointed Froome.
His late inclusion followed a spate of crashes in last Saturday’s road race prompted the withdrawals of Australia’s Richie Porte and Vincenzo Nibali of Italy.
There were bronze medals for gymnast Max Whitlock, shooter Steven Scott, Tour de France cycling champion Chris Froome, and judo’s Sally Conway. He jumped off the bike early during the road race so that he wouldn’t aggravate the injury and has pronounced himself ready to compete. Dumoulin pulled out of the road race on Sunday after just a few minutes still nursing a broken wrist.
Martin Pearman, headmaster at Laugher’s former school, said: “On behalf of everyone at Ripon Grammar School I would like to congratulate Jack on his historic achievement”.
It was a disappointing outcome for the Tour de France victor, who had finished 12th in the road race on Saturday ahead of his preferred event around the coastal roads near Rio. The men will ride just under 60km on a course that includes the Grumari Circuit.
‘Fabian was the clear victor today, more than a minute ahead of me.
Both will have to better two-time and reigning Olympic champion Kristin Armstrong. She’s also the director of community health at a hospital, and wants to spend more time doing the kind of outreach that truly drives her these days.
Armstrong was picked despite facing the weaker competition, and two other American riders tried to replace her on the team through arbitration. He has proven time trial bona fides before, just not in individual events. Eight years later, Mike Eruzione led the United States hockey team to its “Miracle on Ice” gold-medal upset over the Soviet Union at Lake Placid, then chose to retire when he realized he could never match what he accomplished that winter.
“I came into that corner a little too fast and the back wheel skipped out on the bumps and that was it”.
Dumoulin, the pre-race favourite, had overtaken world champion Vasil Kiryienka, who started a minute and a half before him, by the time they reached the third check.

“Against this field, and on such a hard course, we had doubts, but good doubts”.
