Sandy Hook to open new school four years after massacre
Superintendent Joseph Erardi says the district hopes that allowing everyone a look at the school this week will give students a “quiet, respectful, and appropriate opening as teachers and students return to the new school year” on August 29.

Both sides informed state Judge Barbara Bellis of their consensus Thursday after meeting privately at the judge’s instruction.
The lawsuit says the Madison, North Carolina, company should not have sold the AR-15-style rifle used in the shooting to the general public because it’s too risky.
The shop sold the gun used to kill 20 first-graders and six educators. Since the massacre, Sandy Hook pupils have been attending school in neighbouring Monroe.
Ms Horan said: ‘Once you got down to where the driveway opened up, there was a whole different feeling, at least for me.
The school’s superintendent says those students are still recovering in their own ways and school officials will continue to help them moving forward.
“Sandy Hook will have a quiet opening in September”, said Dr. Erardi. Llodra said when students return, they will see their turtle and that “keeping something they love front and center” will give the children a sense of comfort.
Sandy Hook Principal Kathy Gombos said she expects the transition to be hard emotionally.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was among the group offered a first-look at the new building. Matthew Consigli, president of Consigli Construction, said the goal was to build a warm, inspiring environment.
Project architect Alana Konefal led journalists on a tour of the school, which features a distinct facade that’s an homage to the town. Working together, they have come up with a school that embraces nature.
Landscaping makes it clear to those inside the school who is approaching the building.
The old school was demolished in 2013, a few months after the killings.
Among the unique features of the new school are a pair of tree house spaces, breakout spaces nestled at the corner of the building that give an overhead view of the nearby forest. Principal Kathy Gombos said she expects the move to the new building to be emotional.

Paintings created by students are part of the overall decorating scheme, including a mural in the school’s colors of green and white that reads “Be Kind”. The message is the motto of Ben’s Bell, named after a 3-year-old who died in Arizona in 2002, about kindness and healing. The fate of the 57-year-old building was decided by a 28-member task force of elected officials following a series of public hearings.
