Arsenal’s Gabriel hurt in friendly win over City

If Liverpool start well in the league, our confidence will grow and our limited fixtures in the busy run-up to Christmas will look much easier to navigate.

Wenger said: ‘We’ve not made a diagnosis yet, I can’t tell you more.

Gabriel was Arsenal’s most senior available centre back, with Per Mertesacker injured and Laurent Koscielny not yet back in training following his exertions for France at Euro 2016.

The Gabriel set-back has intensified the pressure on Wenger to sign a new central defender.

Speaking at a special launch of the new Premier League season at Market Road in Islington on Wednesday, Wenger said: “We are in the transfer market, but right now we are focused on concentrating on our players”. That leaves the Gunners without their two starting centerbacks and now Gabriel is hurt too, having sprained his ankle in Arsenal’s final preseason friendly.

“Laurent Koscielny came back very late from the Euros so we are in a hard position for Sunday’s game against Liverpool”.

The France worldwide, who helped his side reach the final of the Euros in Paris, was joined on the training ground on Wednesday by compatriot Olivier Giroud and Germany’s Mesut Ozil. “That’s why we may have crossed the £100 million bar for the first time”.

That means he will most likely have to make do with what’s left of his squad.

Lyon have also rejected a €35m bid from Arsenal for striker Alexandre Lacazette, but Wilshere, who would welcome some further defensive cover, feels they are already strong enough in attack. Unfortunately for the club, it isn’t just the defence that needs to be improved, so any plans Wenger might have are now even more complicated and urgent.

Former Arsenal defender Sebastien Squillaci has insisted, via Goal, that his old club can still challenge for the Premier League despite a lack of signings.
