China: Big Explosion Hits Tianjin

Videos and photos posted to social media show series of enormous explosions in the northern Chinese city Tianjin.

It’s expected that casualties will be reported in China, although right now there are no further details beyond what the videos show.

China Central Television said the explosion was a unsafe chemical substance blast that rocked the city around 11:30 p.m. local time. One hospital received more than 50 people wounded in the blast, with more on the way. The explosion also shattered their window glass and fish tanks.

The explosion reportedly occurred around midnight local time along the docks at the Tianjin Binhai New Development Zone.

Residents in neighborhoods nearby said flame lit up the sky and the blast with a big noise blew up dust of dozens of meters high.

Tianjin is the fourth largest city in the vast country, with a population of 15 million people.
