Fostering a love for sport among girls comes from just being there on the sidelines to cheer them on and celebrate their victories, just as we do for the boys.

The tie means Oleksiak and Manuel each won gold medals, and no silver was awarded. Before the first relay victory, it had been 20 years since a Canadian woman had medaled at the Olympics.

Canada’s Olympic team has racked up another medal, bringing our count to six as of early Thursday morning. “She’s been closing so incredibly”.

Canada’s men have yet to medal at the pool-or anywhere else in Rio.

We almost had another medal in the pool. Manuel is also the first American to win gold in the women’s 100 freestyle since 1984, when Nancy Hogshead and Carrie Steinseifer shared the gold. “Still going back to school”. “She’s 16 years old, and she’s got that young woman in there, but then you see her goofing around and texting and tweeting before a race, and you just want to shake her”.

Canada was fourth in the event at the 2012 London Games. The 21-year-old qualified 14th in the butterfly with a time of 51.99 seconds.

Kierra Smith, 22, of Kelowna, B.C., is heading to the 200-metre breaststroke semifinal, qualifying sixth in 2:23.69 after leading her heat over the final three lengths. “I was like, it’s Missy Franklin!”
