But not the National Rifle Association. “If they ever make me carry a rifle, the first man I want to get in my sights is LBJ”. Michigan’s economy is still recovering from one recession – we can not afford another one under President Trump.

Strategists and Trump detractors agreed that it would be hard, if not impossible, to remove Trump from the Republican ticket. Joining her on stage was American University political historian Allan Lichtman, who has correctly predicted every presidential election since 1981, based on a model consisting of 13 specific benchmarks that assess the strength and effectiveness of the party in power.

Clinton supports some new restrictions on gun ownership, but does not back overturning the amendment.

The controversial remarks were made at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, and refer to a future president’s power to nominate a judge to fill a vacancy on the US Supreme Court.

Helping to establish that connection have been Trump’s sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, avid hunters with ties to the NRA. What Clinton’s campaign packaged as a popular front against a risky candidate, progressives saw as a needless swing to the right – one that empowered discredited foreign policy thinking.

But invoking the First Amendment, the court also said that “a threat must be distinguished from what is constitutionally protected speech”. “Chris and Wayne and all their people at the NRA, these are people that love our country”.

Shaban said Democrats were pandering to their supporters with their response to Trump’s remarks. But presumably Clinton isn’t suggesting that standing up to the gun lobby takes a special kind of courage because this lobby has a particular capacity for violence? They have held up the NRA as a uniquely sinister organisation, and cast themselves as opponents of the group rather than of gun owners in general.

Hillary Clinton made history on Tuesday when she became the first woman to secure a presidential nomination from a major US party – but more than a few American newspapers chose to mark the occasion with big pictures of her smiling husband.

“I don’t think Clinton will change her foreign policy because she’s receiving endorsements from Bush, Reagan and Nixon foreign policy officials”, said Glenn Greenwald, a Pulitzer Prize-winning co-founder of the Intercept.

She has never had to worry about being alone in her home in an emergency situation. But I’ll tell you what: “that will be a disgusting day “.

At a rally in Iowa on Wednesday, Clinton said the remark, which she called a “casual inciting of violence”, offered further proof that Trump does not have the temperament to be president.

“Donald Trump lost me a long time ago”, he declared. “There has been more than one conversation” on the topic, the official said.

Asked in a television interview in May what tax rate he pays, Trump replied “It’s none of your business”.

Trump, as well as Clinton, get some brutal reviews in polls. Barack Obama in the 2008 caucuses.

Higgins has a letter from George W. Bush hanging on his office wall, along with pictures from a trip he took to Israel in 2012 with GOP nominee Mitt Romney. He had tried clearing the air and explaining his side on Wednesday afternoon, but Clinton was one of many Democrats who still too great exception to Trump’s comments. Some reasonable people would probably consider his comment about the Second Amendment people a joke; others would consider it a true threat.

Analysts said he needs to tone down his presentation in a bid to clinch independent voters and others. “I was going to say nose and/or ears, because that’s a very common statement, blood flowing out of somebody’s nose”. “They are more likely to be swing voters and not necessarily NRA members”.

Republicans have expressed frustration that this story was dominating the political coverage, when Mr Trump could have been attacking Mrs Clinton for emails that have just been released by conservative group Judicial Watch.

At times, the association has taken its advocacy for Trump well beyond gun rights.

Soon after that, the host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough, revealed that “a foreign policy expert on the worldwide level went to advise Donald Trump”.

While there is a lot of time left in the campaign, Trump has pushed away many educated moderates over the past few week, and his tumbling poll numbers in some important swing states have demonstrated that.

Trump has not always been such a clear ally of the gun lobby.
