Toronto and Baltimore have played each other extremely competitively to this point, with the Blue Jays holding the edge in the season series, 7-6, while outscoring the Orioles 77-64.

Adeiny Hechavarria scored from first on a two-out triple by Derek Dietrich in the bottom of the ninth inning as Miami rallied to defeat St. Louis. That brought Schoop up with one out and a runner in scoring position later in the inning.

Baltimore took the lead in the top of the 12th when Pedro Alvarez walked and moved to second on a pitcher’s balk.

Baltimore is winless in five games at Toronto this season and has lost 12 of its past 17 away from home.

SAN FRANCISCO – Joe Panik hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and San Francisco beat Washington to snap a three-game losing streak. First, he tossed a scoreless seventh Friday night to help protect a two-run lead. NY sustained another costly injury, this one to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, but snapped a four-game skid that matched its longest this season.

He held the Jays to two runs in 5.2 innings, although his escalated pitch count of 111 knocked him out of the game in the sixth. Heyward made it home with a headfirst slide, sparking a frenzied celebration at Wrigley Field. Five O’s relievers kept the Jays off the board the rest of the way, working 6.1 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Rookie left-hander Blake Snell (3-4) struck out nine over 5 1/3 innings, Luke Maile had a key two-run single against Michael Pineda (5-10) and Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep.

Matt Garza allowed just one earned run in five innings and Milwaukee relievers pitched four hitless innings to stop Pittsburgh.

Right-hander Homer Bailey won while making his first start in 15 months to lead Cincinnati to a 3-2 victory over San Diego in the rubber match of a three-game series at Petco Park. Oh yeah, and just for good measure, a three-run home run hit by Adam Jones.

Playing without ailing slugger Yoenis Cespedes, New York won for only the second time in 10 home games. The Blue Jays have been rumoured to be interested in acquiring a starter before Monday’s trade deadline.

NEW YORK – Slipping in the standings and on the cusp of getting wiped out by Colorado again, the New York Mets got a huge swing from Neil Walker in the seventh inning. Morlaes would follow that by walking JJ Hardy, putting runners on first and second.

Walker also had an RBI triple, but NY sustained another costly injury when shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera strained the patellar tendon in his left knee – the same injury that sidelined him for a little more than two weeks during spring training this year. Martin later scored on a wild pitch by Chapman to make it 3-1.

Minnesota’s Ervin Santana allowed just one earned run in six innings to guide the Twins past the Chicago White Sox 6-4. Stroman went 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in five July starts after going 1-3 with a 7.76 ERA in June. After working a 2-1 count, Schoop delivered the clutch two run single to easily score Alvarez.

The Blue Jays, who overtook the Orioles by winning the first two games of the series, finished July with a record of 16-8.
