With the addition of his three latest gold medals, Phelps now has a whopping 21 career Olympic gold medals as it stands today.
Michael Phelps is the first name that comes to mind when one thinks about competitive swimming.
The Baltimore Ravens stopped play in their preseason game against the Carolina Panthers so fans at M & T Bank Stadium could watch Michael Phelps win his 22nd gold medal. Apparently, Phelps had tears in his eyes when the USA national anthem began playing.
Phelps confirmed the story to Michele Tafoya during an interview with NBC at the end of the night. Back in Maryland we say “O” for the Orioles during that part of the national anthem. See, it’s all about the anthem’s next line, “O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave” – specifically the “O”. And all of a sudden I hear them roar ‘O!’ and I knew exactly where it came from, and I lost it. “Just special to see those guys in the stands”. After garnering gold in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay and the men’s 200-meter butterfly, he most recently anchored Team USA’s gold medal run during the men’s 4×200 freestyle relay.
