Schaub shines in return as Falcons top Redskins 23-17

Redskins starter Kirk Cousins completed each of his five passes for 39 yards on his only possession.

McKissic’s return padded the Falcons’ 13-3 halftime lead build on field goals of 24 and 42 yards by Matt Bryant and a plunge from a yard out by rookie Brandon Wilds. Two plays later they faced third and 11 and McCoy found Rashad Ross in an open spot in the defense for 19 yards.

Colt McCoy takes the field and leads the Redskins down into Falcons territory and drops a dime to Vernon Davis in the corner of the endzone, but Davis drops it. Redskins settle for a field goal, which Hopkins drills.

Key plays: J. D. McKissic took the second-half kickoff and bolted right up the middle for the touchdown.

“I think they’re just flag-happy, or flag-delusional”, Redskins broadcaster Joe Theismann said after Washington was called for a questionable running into the kicker penalty with 1 minute 48 seconds to play.

Atlanta led 23-3 before Washington third-string quarterback Nate Sudfeld led two touchdown drives. The 6-foot-6 Sudfeld completed 10 of 15 passes for 89 yards, including a 6-yard scoring pass to tight end Marcel Jensen. “He’s trying to allow me to make plays in camp so that I can get on the field”.

Undrafted rookie RB Robert Kelley from Tulane possibly gained ground in the competition for a backup spot.

The Falcons signed him to a one-year, $1.25 million make-good contract and converted him to defensive tackle, where he’s now listed as No. 2 behind Grady Jarrett.

Hester, who is one of the greatest kickoff returners off all-time, will be leaving big shoes for McKissic to fill. While rookies Deion Jones and De’Vondre Campbell have dominated the spotlight at the linebacker position during training camp, veteran LaRoy Reynolds, who was signed in free agency, has quietly gone about his business. The Falcons’ first possession started inside the 1-yard line and the second at the 25, the team going three-and-out both times.

Redskins: Among players held out were TE Jordan Reed (thumb), WR Jamison Crowder (hamstring), WR Reggie Diggs (knee), and LT Trent Williams (sore knee).

Falcons: S Kemal Ishmael left with a shoulder injury. Rookie S Keanu Neal (trunk), TE Levine Toilolo (hand) and RB Terron Ward (ankle) were held out, but are expected to “participate in some fashion” in Sunday’s practice, according to coach Dan Quinn. Redskins recover. Running back Mack Brown looks like the best of the bunch tonight as he picks up tough yards to move the team near the goal line. Matt Jones, Chris Thompson and Marshall combined for no yards on eight carries. Robinson was the standout with three catches for 118 yards. Justin Hardy and rookie Devin Fuller had 17-yard receptions.

Weatherspoon Brings the Hammer: Sean Weatherspoon said last week that he felt 100 percent healthy, and in his first game as a Falcon since 2013, he looked like his old self.
